Soil Vs Soiless Culture

Greenhouse production is based on either soil or soilless culture. In soil culture, vegetables are produced in the native soil or in a loamy soil brought inside the greenhouse. Soilless culture, the production of plants in a soilless medium, can be done via hydroponics or with an organic (or artificial) substrate.
The two broad categories of soilless culture are illustrated in the diagram below, with examples of media used in each.
In soil culture, also known as ground culture, vegetables are raised on level ground as well as in mounded beds. Soil culture is more popular with organic growers than hydroponic methods. One of the reasons organic growers prefer soil culture to hydroponics is that soil-building practices are an already familiar concept based on decades of research and experience.
Production techniques used in ground culture are similar to intensive market gardening methods used in the field. Rear-tine tillers or mechanical spaders are used in soil preparation, and specialized wheel hoes and hand tools are used for cultivation and weed control. Organic fertilizers and soil amendments are extensively used to feed the soil.
Soilless culture methods usually have higher yields than ground culture systems. Another advantage of a soilless system is easier control of disease problems. In the soilless techniques described below, the media can be disposed of after one crop has been grown, or it can be pasteurized relatively easily.
Bag Culture - In bag culture, plants are grown in a soilless medium contained in lay-flat or upright polyethylene bags (2-5 gallons in size) and fed with liquid fertilizers through drip irrigation lines. Media can be peat/vermiculite, sawdust, rockwool, rice hulls, pine bark, peanut hulls, or mixes of any of those. Bag culture is adaptable to both aggregate hydroponics fed with liquid fertilizers as well as standard soilless culture, in which the bulk of fertility is supplied via compost-based potting mixes.
Vertical Towers - A form of bag culture is the vertical tower. Long bags full of media are hung from support wires or beams, and plants are placed in slits or holes made on the sides of the bag. The appeal of this system is the very efficient use of greenhouse space; since the plants are using vertical space, very little floor space is needed.The most popular vertical tower is a patented system called Verti-Gro. Verti-Gro uses square, styrofoam pots, which are stacked 8-10 pots high and can be re-used for 5-10 years. Tim Carpenter, who owns the company, recommends using perlite and coir (coconut fiber) for media. Fertilizer is supplied by a drip irrigation system, in which solution flows from the topmost to the bottom box and into a gravel support base, where it can be captured and re-used. Crops that have been grown with this system include lettuces, strawberries, herbs, tomatoes, greens, spinach, nasturtium, and cut flowers.

  • Kualiti Hasil - Fertigasi: Tinggi / Konvensional: Tidak menentu
  • Mengutip Hasil - Fertigasi: Lebih cepat dipetik hasilnya (pokok lebih subur) serta tempoh mengutip hasil lebih panjang / Konvensional: Lambat mengutip hasil lebih-lebih lagi ketika musim kemarau ataupun waktu musim tengkujuh yang berpanjangan serta tempoh mengutip hasil lebih pendek.
  • Kejerihan - Fertigasi: Rendah / Konvensional: Tinggi
  • Kesan ke atas alam sekitar - Fertigasi: Mesra alam (penggunaan baja dan racun yang terkawal) / Konvensional: Penggunaan najis haiwan boleh menyebabkan pencemaran alam (udara), air bawah tanah mungkin tercemar selain boleh menyebabkan hakisan tanah sekiranya ditanam di lereng-lereng bukit. Selain itu boleh berlaku timbun-tambah garam-garam galian dalam batas-batas tanaman (pH terlalu rendah dan EC pula terlalu tinggi-tanah perlu diperbaiki atau dirawat untuk mendapatkan hasil yang baik untuk tanaman musim berikutnya.
  • Keselesaan bekerja - Fertigasi: Lebih panas kerana hawa panas di dalam rumah lindungan hujan. Boleh bekerja pada bila-bila masa walaupun di hari hujan. / Konvensional: Kurang panas, tetapi di kala hujan tidak boleh bekerja. Tanah pula tidak boleh dibajak dimusim hujan kerana terlalu lembut manakala dimusim panas yang berpanjangan, tanah pula terlalu keras.
  • Pengurusan dan Penjagaan - Fertigasi: Struktur pelindung tanaman, jaring kalis serangga, sistem pengairan titis perlu diurus dan dijaga secara berterusan. / Konvensional: Pengurusan lebih kepada batas-batas tanaman, sistem perparitan dan saliran, alat-alat dan mesin membajak dan juga pam air

Perbandingan Antara Fertigasi & Penanaman secara Konvensional



  • Risiko (serangan serangga perosak, penyakit & kekeringan) - Fertigasi: Rendah (kerana menggunakan dinding kalis serangga pada rumah lindungan dan tiada masalah penyakit bawaan tanah). Masalah kekeringan pula sederhana (hanya berlaku sekiranya terputus bekalan, lalai atau sistem pengairan bocor). / Konvensional: Risiko serangan serangga & penyakit tinggi. Risiko kekeringan rendah kerana akar pokok boleh mendapat air dari tanah atau air hujan.

  • Tenaga Buruh - Fertigasi: Bermusim (tinggi terutama di waktu menanam dan mengutip hasil, tetapi boleh dikontrakkan). / Konvensional: Sentiasa tinggi

  • Kesan akibat mengubah anak pokok - Fertigasi: Kurang terencat (cepat pulih kerana sistem pengairan yang lebih efisien). / Konvensional: Terencat lebih lama sebelum pulih.

  • Keseragaman Pokok - Fertigasi: Lebih seragam (menerima larutan baja yang sama) /Konvensional: Tidak seragam kerana dipengaruhi oleh kesuburan tanah yang berbeza-beza

Fertigation is the application of fertilizers, soil amendments, or other water soluble products through an irrigation system. Chemigation, a related and sometimes interchangeable term, is the application of chemicals through an irrigation system. Chemigation is considered to be a more restrictive and controlled process due to the potential nature of the products being delivered (pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc.) to cause harm to humans, animals or the environment. Therefore chemigation is generally more regulated than fertigation.

Fertigation is used extensively in commercial agriculture and horticulture and is starting to be used in general landscape applications as dispenser units become more reliable and easy to use.

Benefits of fertigation over traditional broadcast or drop fertilizing methods include:

  • Increased nutrient absorption by plants
  • Reduction in fertilizer and chemicals needed
  • Reduced leaching to the water table
  • Reduction in water usage due to the plant's resulting increased root mass being able to trap and hold water
  • Cost Savings - Usually when factors such as labor, fuel, and interrupted play are factored into traditional fertilizer applications, significant cost savings can be seen from use of
    fertigation techniques. Additionally, using fertigation, you can usually get the
    same results from using inexpensive liquids as you can from expensive time release
    granular fertilizers
  • Consistent Nutrient Levels - Feeding low levels of nutrition continuously as opposed to intermittent applications provides improved turf consistency.
  • Reduced Labor - Fertigation reduces the amount of labor required to apply granular fertilizers or sprayed out foliars.
  • Low operational costs
